WR.com: When did you discover the concept of waiters race?
John Scott: I heard about the concept three years ago in the middle of the organization of an athletic event. The same year, I decided to organize the first waiters race in Sydney.
WR: How many months before the race did you start organizing it?
John Scott: 6 months.
WR: What are the main difficulties you faced during the organization of the race?
John Scott: Venues availability, costs, insurance and public liability.
WR: What kind of media, support did you use to promote your waiters race?
John Scott: Newspapers, TV. We also used media personalities from sport and entertainment to promote the race.
WR: Could you please give us an idea about the cost of the waiters race for your organisation?
John Scott: $30,000 -$40,000 Australian dollars ($32,000$-43,000 US dollars).
WR: How did you sponsors receive your project in general?
John Scott: Excellent as the event linked to wine company and travel company and hospitality, tourism marketing.
About results and plans for the future
WR: Did you face any difficulty during the event itself?
John Scott: Mainly from venue management.
WR: Were the other people involved in the waiters race (participants, sponsors etc…) satisfied with the waiters race?
John Scott: Yes all major sponsors and support sponsors were very pleased.
WR: Were there any VIP/Special guests at the waiters race?
John Scott: Yes, the President of Australian Tourism and hospitality Institute Bill Galvin OAM attended the race.
WR: Do you intend to organize a waiters race in the future?
John Scott: Yes, we already plan to organize a similar one in 12 months. However, the venue is going to be different e.g. Sydney Opera House.
WR: Was there at your race something very original, innovative that you are proud of?
John Scott: we succeeded in attracting a big number of professionals with different profiles: our waiters race indeed welcomed Hospitality College students, 50 professional waiters and 30 stewards.
